Mastering "Open Innovation"

In his landmark book on the topic Henry Chesbrough provides a definition of "open innovation" - Open innovation is the use of purposive inflows and outflows of knowledge to accelerate internal innovation, and expand the markets for external use of innovation, respectively. This paradigm assumes that firms can and should use external ideas as well as internal ideas, and internal and external paths to market, as they look to advance their technology.”

Most of the Blue Mango Innovation team have been practicing forms of open innovation for a number of years and we have developed a methodology for helping companies master this technique. There are several steps to our technique including the following:

Step 1 - Involves developing a strategy - who does the company  compete with, when and with what.  This step is based on an analysis of Key Success Factors

Step 2 - Establishes the areas of focus based on the competitive analysis carried out in Step 1

Step 3 - Involves putting an "open innovation team" together including an analysis ofpersonality types, roles, responsibilities, and metrics

Step 4 - Develops an open innovation model specific to the company's aspirations based on best practices of other open innovation best practice companies

Step 5 - Looks at developing idea evaluation and validation techniques both rough and fine filters

Step 6 - Establishes the transition method between the open innovation team and the product development team
